Trip budget with an FX buffer: a 7–14 day worked example

Last updated

Quoted flight and hotel prices rarely match what hits your card statement. A mid-market reference and a card or DCC rate are different numbers, and a fee or spread can sit on top. This guide walks a 7–14 day trip through the same maths as the live trip budget calculator, with the buffer percent labelled as an assumption — not a forecast. For terminal-side spread versus DCC, keep the sister FX FAQ: spread vs fee vs DCC and the currency conversion cost calculator open beside it.

Primary sources below were checked on 2026-10-30 (Asia/Hong_Kong). Figures that match the live tool use its illustrative defaults; they are not live FX quotes.

What the budget adds up

Piece Currency Role
Lodging, food, local transport, activities Destination days × daily local
Mid-market rate you type Home per 1 destination Converts the local subtotal
Flight, visa, insurance Home One-time add-ons
Buffer % — Assumption × home subtotal, added on top

Formula (same as the live tool):

  1. Daily local = lodging + food + local transport + activities
  2. Local subtotal = days × daily local
  3. Local in home = local subtotal × mid-market rate
  4. One-time = flight + visa + insurance
  5. Subtotal = local in home + one-time
  6. Buffer = subtotal × buffer% / 100
  7. Total = subtotal + buffer

The European Central Bank publishes euro foreign exchange reference rates on business days for information purposes and strongly discourages using them for transaction purposes. Those prints are one public mid-market education source for euro pairs. This site’s trip-budget page does not download a rate — you type the figure you want to stress-test.

Worked table (illustrative — not live quotes)

Shared assumptions (labelled):

  • Daily local 200.00 EUR (120 lodging + 45 food + 10 transport + 25 activities)
  • Illustrative mid-market 8.50 HKD per 1 EUR (not an ECB print; the live default is the same illustration)
  • One-time 3,480.00 HKD (flight 3,200 + visa 0 + insurance 280)
  • Buffer 10% or 15% — assumption, not a forecast
Days Local subtotal Local in HKD @ 8.50 One-time Subtotal Buffer assumption Total
7 1,400.00 EUR 11,900.00 3,480.00 15,380.00 10% → 1,538.00 16,918.00 HKD
7 1,400.00 EUR 11,900.00 3,480.00 15,380.00 15% → 2,307.00 17,687.00 HKD
10 2,000.00 EUR 17,000.00 3,480.00 20,480.00 10% → 2,048.00 22,528.00 HKD
10 2,000.00 EUR 17,000.00 3,480.00 20,480.00 15% → 3,072.00 23,552.00 HKD
14 2,800.00 EUR 23,800.00 3,480.00 27,280.00 10% → 2,728.00 30,008.00 HKD
14 2,800.00 EUR 23,800.00 3,480.00 27,280.00 15% → 4,092.00 31,372.00 HKD

The 7-day / 10% row matches the live calculator defaults (16,918.00 HKD). Change only days or the buffer percent and the total moves with the same closed-form steps.

For context only (not used in the table): on 2026-10-29 the ECB euro reference list printed HKD 8.7330 per 1 EUR as a mid-market reference. That print is education, not a card rate, and the worked table still uses the tool’s labelled 8.50 illustration so you can reproduce the defaults without inventing a quote.

Where card FX and DCC sit (outside the buffer)

The buffer does not model your issuer’s foreign-currency fee or a merchant’s DCC markup. Those are separate comparisons:

  • Pay in local currency → issuer converts under your card terms (spread and/or fee).
  • Accept DCC → merchant or ATM bills in your billing currency at their disclosed rate.

Visa’s consumer travel page on Dynamic Currency Conversion requires merchants and ATMs to display amounts in both currencies with symbols, the exchange rate used, and any additional fees or markup, and states that merchants and ATMs should give you a choice to accept or decline and must not choose on your behalf. Rank options by effective cost, not by the word “no fee.”

Plug a mid-market figure and an offered rate into the FX conversion cost calculator, or use the checklist in fx-spread-dcc-faq.

Soft next step

Enter your own days, daily local costs, mid-market rate and buffer percent in the trip budget calculator (zh-hant twin: 行程預算計算機). Treat the buffer as a dial, not a prediction. For card-side maths, open the FX conversion cost calculator.
