Add up a trip in your home currency. Daily costs stay in the destination currency, one-time flight, visa, and insurance stay in the home currency, and a buffer percent you choose is added on top. The home currency starts at Hong Kong dollars.
The figures are an educational estimate, not financial advice. See the disclaimer.
How this is calculated
Daily local costs are multiplied by the number of days, then converted with a mid-market rate you type. Flight, visa, and insurance are already in the home currency. The buffer percent is an assumption, applied to that subtotal.
Formula
The rate is home-currency units for 1 destination unit. When both currencies match, the rate is 1. No fee is included.
Daily local = lodging + food + local transport + activities
Local subtotal = days × daily local
Local in home currency = local subtotal × mid-market rate
One-time = flight + visa + insurance
Subtotal = local in home currency + one-time
Buffer = subtotal × buffer% / 100
Total = subtotal + buffer
Assumptions
Buffer percent
An assumption you choose. It is not a recommended cushion and not a forecast of extra spending. At 10% the buffer is one tenth of the subtotal. Zero adds nothing.
Mid-market rate
You type home-currency units for 1 destination unit. A mid-market reference is not the rate a card or a bank will use, and a fee can sit on top. The 8.50 default is an illustration, not a rate from any date.
Public reference
The European Central Bank publishes euro foreign exchange reference rates on business days. Those rates are mid-market references. This page does not download a rate. If your pair is not the euro, copy a mid-market quote yourself.
Which currency
Lodging, food, local transport, and activities are in the destination currency. Flight, visa, and insurance are in the home currency. The home currency starts as HKD.
Same currency
When the destination currency and the home currency match, the rate is 1 and nothing is converted.
Quoted rate
To compare a card or bank quote with a mid-market rate, use the currency conversion cost calculator. This page only applies the rate you type.
Money only
The total is a budget. It does not count visa-free days, and it does not cover timed entry or a park lottery.
Worked example
Seven days, with daily costs in euros: lodging 120, food 45, local transport 10, and activities 25. Daily local is 200.00 EUR. Seven days is 1,400.00 EUR.
The illustrative mid-market rate is 8.50 HKD per 1 EUR. That figure is not a European Central Bank print. Local costs in home currency are 11,900.00 HKD. Flight 3,200, visa 0, and insurance 280 are 3,480.00 HKD. The subtotal is 15,380.00 HKD.
A 10% buffer is an assumption, equal to 1,538.00 HKD. The total is 16,918.00 HKD. A second row keeps every amount in HKD and uses a 15% buffer assumption, so the total is 3,795.00 HKD.

FAQ
How is the trip total calculated?
Multiply the days by the daily local costs: lodging, food, local transport, and activities. Convert that sum into the home currency with the mid-market rate you enter, in home units for one destination unit. Add flight, visa, and insurance in the home currency. The buffer is that subtotal times the buffer percent. The total is the subtotal plus the buffer.
What does the buffer percent mean?
The buffer percent is an assumption you type. It is not a recommended spare amount and not a forecast of extra spending. The calculator multiplies the subtotal by that percent and adds the result. At 10% the buffer is one tenth of the subtotal. Zero adds nothing. Change the percent to see a larger or smaller cushion.
Is the mid-market rate what my card or bank will charge?
No. A mid-market rate is a reference, not the rate a card or a bank will use, and a fee can sit on top. The European Central Bank publishes euro foreign exchange reference rates as one public source. You type the figure. This page does not download it. Compare a quoted rate with the currency conversion cost calculator.
Where do the 8.50 and 10% figures come from?
They are illustrations, not published rates and not advice. In the worked example, 8.50 means 8.50 home-currency units per 1 destination unit. It is not a European Central Bank print from any date. The 10% buffer is an assumption you can replace. Type the rate and the percent you want. The total follows those inputs.
Does this plan visa-free days or park tickets?
